
You have heard of chatbots. You have heard of copilots. Now meet the agent.
AI agents are software programs that do not just suggest actions. They take them. They book meetings, order inventory, respond to customer complaints, and even negotiate contracts. They are given a goal and a set of permissions, and then they go to work without waiting for a human to click approve.
This sounds like the ultimate efficiency play. And for many businesses, it will be.
But here is the problem. Most companies are deploying agents without updating their security models to account for machine speed autonomy.
The Risk of Set It and Forget It
In the past, if a hacker compromised an employee's laptop, they had to act during business hours, mimic human behavior, and hope not to trigger fraud alerts.
Today, if a hacker compromises an AI agent that has permission to issue refunds or update customer records, they can instruct that agent to perform 10,000 fraudulent transactions in 30 seconds. The agent does not get tired. It does not get suspicious. It just executes.

- Over-Permissioned Agents
An employee gives an agent access to email to schedule meetings. The agent also gains access to attachments, contacts, and sent folders. That agent becomes a perfect vector for data exfiltration. - Agent to Agent Communication (A2A)
Your procurement agent communicates with a supplier's fulfillment agent. If either agent is compromised, the trust chain is broken. There is no human in the loop to verify that the invoice address just changed to a PO box in another country. - Model Manipulation (Indirect Prompt Injection)
An attacker hides instructions in a public document that an agent reads. The agent follows the hidden commands. This is not a theoretical risk. It has been demonstrated in multiple enterprise AI systems.
Why Traditional Security Falls Short
Firewalls and antivirus software were designed to block known malicious files. They are not designed to monitor the intent of a legitimate transaction executed by a non-human entity.
You cannot simply ask an agent, Are you acting in the company's best interest? It will always say yes.
The Practical Response
- Inventory your agents. You cannot secure what you do not know exists. Shadow AI is now evolving into Shadow Agency.
- Apply the principle of least privilege. An agent that books travel does not need access to your customer database.
- Require human approval for high-risk actions. Agents are great for read tasks. For write tasks that move money or change data, impose a hard stop.
- Monitor agent behavior baselines. Just like user behavior analytics, agents have patterns. A deviation from normal, such as an agent suddenly accessing midnight payroll files, is a red flag.
